I love my kids more than anything in this world, but somewhere along the way, I stopped understanding them. Every conversation with my teenage son turned into an argument. My daughters barely talked to me. I was working hard to give them everything I never had growing up, but I couldn’t figure out why we were drifting apart.

A friend introduced me to Elder Sage Foundation, and I attended a fatherhood workshop. What surprised me most was realizing how many other dads were struggling with the exact same things.

One of the mentors told me something I’ll never forget: “Your kids don’t need a perfect father. They need a present one.”

I started listening instead of lecturing. I stopped trying to fix every problem and started asking questions. I even took my son on one of the father-child outings, and for the first time in years, we talked like friends.

I’m still learning. I still make mistakes. But now my kids know I’m not just the guy who pays the bills. I’m their dad, and I’m here for them.

Elder Sage didn’t teach me how to control my children. It taught me how to connect with them.
