I Stopped Waiting for Someone to Notice Me

For six years, I showed up early, stayed late, and worked harder than almost everyone around me. Yet every time a promotion opened up, someone else got it.

I was frustrated, bitter, and convinced management didn’t appreciate me.

Then I attended an Elder Sage leadership workshop. I expected the usual motivational speech about working hard and believing in yourself. Instead, we talked about ownership, communication, mentorship, and what actually makes someone a leader.

One of the mentors challenged me with a question: “If you were promoted tomorrow, would the people around you want to follow you?”

I didn’t have an answer.

I realized I had spent years proving I could do my job without ever demonstrating that I could lead others. I complained about problems instead of helping solve them. I wanted recognition, but I wasn’t investing in the people around me.

With help from my Elder Sage mentor, I developed a professional growth plan. I started asking for feedback, volunteering for projects, and helping newer employees succeed.

Eight months later, I earned my first supervisory promotion.

But the promotion wasn’t the biggest change. My entire attitude toward work was different.

Elder Sage taught me that success isn’t something you wait for someone to hand you. It’s something you prepare yourself to earn.
