I Didn't Realize How Alone I'd Become

After my divorce, I didn’t really have anyone.

My kids were grown and living their own lives. Most of my old friends had drifted away. I went to work, came home, watched television, and went to bed. Sometimes I’d go an entire weekend without having a real conversation with another person.

I told myself I was fine. Men my age are supposed to be independent, right?

Then I saw an Elder Sage community event advertised online. I almost didn’t go. I figured it would be awkward sitting around with strangers talking about feelings.

Instead, I found a group of regular guys. Fathers, husbands, veterans, retirees, and young men trying to figure life out. We talked, laughed, shared stories, and planned a weekend volunteer project.

For the first time in years, I felt like I belonged somewhere.

A few weeks later, my truck broke down. Before I could even figure out what to do, two guys from the group showed up to help.

I remember standing in my driveway thinking, “I haven’t had friends like this in twenty years.”

Now I attend our gatherings regularly. I’ve even started mentoring younger men, sharing some of the lessons I learned the hard way.

I thought I was joining a group because I needed help.

Turns out, I had something to offer, too.

Elder Sage reminded me that being strong doesn’t mean doing everything alone.
