I Almost Lost the Best Thing in My Life

I thought being a good husband meant working hard, staying faithful, and making sure my family had everything they needed. I was doing all three, so when my wife told me she wasn’t happy, I honestly didn’t understand.

Looking back, I wasn’t really listening to her. I was physically home, but mentally I was somewhere else. Every disagreement became a competition to see who was right.

I joined an Elder Sage men’s discussion group after a friend invited me. At first, I didn’t think I needed marriage advice from a room full of guys. Turns out, I needed someone willing to tell me the truth.

One of the men asked me, “Are you trying to win the argument, or are you trying to build a marriage?”

That question hit me hard.

Through the group’s conversations about accountability, communication, and emotional maturity, I started recognizing my own mistakes. I learned that leadership at home doesn’t mean having the final word. Sometimes it means being the first person to apologize.

My wife and I still have disagreements. But now we actually work through them.

I went to Elder Sage thinking I needed to figure out how to change my marriage. Instead, I learned how to change myself.
